1992 Fender Masterbuilt Custom Shop 1954 Stratocaster crafted by Jay Madore. This is an early Custom Shop '54 strat that was entirely hand built by Jay Madore back when Fender's Custom Shop guitars were made by a single luthier. This is in excellent overall condition with zero issues and is a faithful '54 reissue in every way. It plays perfectly and sounds exactly how a vintage strat should sound. It is all original except for the frets, which have recently been professionally refretted with modern 6105 frets but the original vintage-sized frets are included along with the nut. Like a true 1954 strat, it features the correct tuners with a line through the middle, bakelite rounded pickup covers, bakelite volume and tone knobs, football-shaped pickup switch, Pat Pending bridge saddles, and handwound '54 pickups. It weighs 7.99 pounds and has a 1.65" nut width. It has a 9.5" fingerboard radius. The neck's thickness measures 0.877" at the 1st fret and 0.997" at the 12th fret.
There is very little wear considering its age and it has been very well kept all its life. The 2-tone sunburst finish shines brightly. There's a couple finish checking marks and a couple very minor dings and scratches throughout but nothing more than what you would see on a modern Custom Shop NOS or Closet Classic relic job. The back of the neck is clean and smooth with only two tiny fingernail marks. The maple fingerboard is still glossy with no noticeable wear other than around the edges. The 6105 refret job was done extremely well and shows no sign of fretwear. The original vintage-size frets are included and only have a small amount of fretwear, so the refret was only done because the original owner wanted more modern frets. The headstock is in great condition with only minor scuffing around the edges. The tuners show some patina and work perfectly. All electronics are original and the tone potentiometers date to 1992. '54 reissue strats like this were usually shipped with a 3-way pickup switch installed and a 5-way included in the box, which is now installed. The middle pickup is non-reverse-wound like a true '54. The volume and tone controls are also wired like a true '54.
Includes the original tweed hardshell case. Does not include any other accessories or paperwork.
This masterpiece is not your average Custom Shop reissue Strat. It is an exact historic recreation of the original 1954 Stratocaster in every way, including retooled materials and hardware using the exact same techniques used back in 1954. In the spring of 1954, in a small shop in Southern California, musical history was made with the introduction and shipment of the first Fender Stratocaster guitar. Everything about the guitar was new and innovative. The tremolo design, the sleek and distinctive bodylines, the "Offset Contour" body, and not two - but THREE pickups! Instantly, guitar players from every genre of musical tastes sought out and purchased one of these "futuristic" designed instruments. The first Fender Stratocaster guitars were used for western swing, jazz, blues, country, and any other style of music guitarists could dream up. You could not contain this design. The Fender Stratocaster was not only ahead of its time; it defined electric guitar design. Now, 50 years later - it still does!
Jay Madore from Fender's Custom Shop has faithfully recreated a 1954 Stratocaster guitar, Master Built at Fender's world renowned "Dream Factory" in Corona, California and features custom reproduction original 1954 pickups, original "U"-shape maple neck, original finish and body contours shipped in 1954.
True to the original instruments are several other features, such as the unique knobs, switch tip, pickguard, tremolo cover plate, and pickup covers that have been retooled and manufactured using the exact formulas and materials. Also included are the original, then "Patent Pending" bridge saddles, which have been replicated even though Fender has long owned the patents for these parts. Finally rounding out the package is a replica of the form-fit case shipped with the originals in 1954.
